Hoping this discussion is useful and might add a little bit to our knowledge.

EDIT: Not posted in DR7 Or DR8.
PS Is this one in DR7 or DR8 or not? Or was this one not mentioned in a previous discussion about the data releases? An answer would be very helpful 😃

I am not sure I understand the title of this thread. Looking at the first object, it is in dr8

    http://skyserver.sdss3.org/dr8/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=1237661056357695793

although it is outside the dr7 footprint.

    Hi Budgieye,
The third one I mentioned was not in DR7 or DR8, at least that is what I understand from elisabeth's comments. The other three are not on the NED .Maybe I should have made that clearer. I thought I'd create a discussion about galaxies not mentioned in those lists, maybe it will prove useful. If not I'd be glad to leave this discussion alone.

When a galaxy is not mentioned on the NED, does Galaxy Zoo/the science team play a role in getting them on the NED? I thought it'd be helpful if these objects are listed in a single discussion. If I understood incorrectly I am going to change the title of this discussion.

P.S. I edited the comments. Maybe you could answer the question I posted in the third comment. I think that might help a lot 😃, because now I am not sure if I understood Elisabeth's comments correctly.

Some galaxies don't have an SDSS ObjID number. The reason may because the galaxy was too close to a bright star, and was "masked", or the galaxy was too close to the edge of the "film". Also, each SDSS sweep imaged more of the sky, so dr10 looks at more sky than dr9, than dr8, etc. So "new" objects in each sweep won't have an ID number in previous data releases.

Sloane Digital Star Survey (SDSS) NED (NASA Extra-Galactic Datase) and SIMBAD (Strasbourg Imaging... star catalog) are all separate, though their databases are linked which is nice. SIMBAD specializes in brighter stars,, though it does have some of the brighter galaxies. NED specializes in galaxies, though it does have some stars. NED might fall behind in entering any new data, because there is never enough time and money. SDSS and NED might not have dim galaxies, the kind that Hubble Space Telescope might have looked at.

See the old forum Objects that do not exist ! http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=276640.msg394157#msg394157 for examples of galaxies that did not have ID then, but they might have now.

If you start a thread, it is yours to take care of. So the rest of us don't get confused, make it clear what is the purpose of the thread.

In Talk, we can start collections using hashtags, so you might announce the use of a hashtag eg noID #noID, and examples of several galaxies that fit your idea of what the collection should be. Then perhaps you can provide feedback when people are using the hashtag incorrectly.

Galaxies should be properly researched, finding the dr8 and dr7 number. It is best to publish the SDSS number too since our other ID numbers keep going out of date. You might want to run the dr7 and dr8 numbers through the old forum, to make sure that you are not re-inventing the wheel.

Here are the navigate website for dr7, dr8 and dr10. Also Galaxy Zoo Forum

dr means "data release" Every year, SDSS images some more galaxies, and releases the data. So dr10 is data released during the 10th year, and also the data for the previous nine years.

As planetaryscience stated in the last post on this thread

"Several of the early posts on this thread now are identified, as the GALEXASC survey was finally added to their catalogs"

As I see it they just have to catch up with us zooites. 😃.
