The nature of asteroids in DECaLS images

  • planetaryscience by planetaryscience

I'm not sure if this has already been posted, but earlier today I found out how to find the identity of asteroids in DECaLS.

The imaging dates are stored on the 'ccd' option of the survey. I've noticed it doesn't always display the correct date, but has so far shown me the correct time. I've already sent observations of 4 identified asteroids, and plan more later. One drawback of reporting observations using the survey, however, is that the survey only includes coordinates to four decimal points- about three times larger than the Minor Planet Center prefers it. However, I suppose it would have to do until I find a better way to get the locations.

I have a small collection of asteroids i plan on slowly sifting through, first one i found is 12 Victoria if i'm correct, only 11 added before first 😃

For DR1 instead of using 'ccd', it might be more precise and faster to use the 'sources' button. If you then click inside a source circle it provides data on the different bands, and also a blue link to the data you need; band - date - time + Ra, dec etc.

    DR2 has exposures button instead

    Great 'tuturial' btw c_cld!
