Galaxy Zoo Talk

2 trillion galaxies in the Universe

  • Budgieye by Budgieye moderator

Observable Universe contains ten times more galaxies than previously thought

. The Hubble Deep Field images, captured in the mid 1990s, gave the
first real insight into this. Myriad faint galaxies were revealed, and
it was estimated that the observable Universe contains between 100 to
200 billion galaxies [1]. Now, an international team, led by
Christopher Conselice from the University of Nottingham, UK, have
shown that this figure is at least ten times too low.

I'm sure Galaxy Zoo can deal with that number? Unfortunately, most of the galaxies will look like blobs, even in Hubble fields, so will be hard to classify.

Multiply 2 trillion galaxies by 100 billion stars per galaxy, to get an astronomical number of stars in the observable universe. 😃

Blobs are classified the fastest, so bring it on 😃

Hopefully the nearest blobs will look less fuzzy in the James Webb Space Telescope!
