Bow Tie galaxies
-
I just viewed this galaxy:
MCG +02-05-039
The shape caught my attention. Have more galaxies of this type been found?

I noticed it had been posted before, but I thought I'd highlight it again.
Thanks for the lookalike 😃. I wonder what evolutionary processes make them look like a barbell or bowtie.Posted

What a find! Amazing.
Maybe like the #X-shapednucleus in edge ons?
a #shellgalaxy ?Posted

Hi wtaskew, bow tie seems better description than barbell. I am going to change the title of this discussion 😃

Please join us on the hunt for more of these bow tie shaped galaxies. We'd like to know why they are shaped that way.Posted

By the way there really is a Bow Tie Galaxy:
NGC 3718Posted

love the name "Chubby Bunny"

I take it the bowtie effect is due to a dust lane that isn't showing up in very good resolution?
Note to Obama: Reason for more funding for much better scopes.
OK that linked pic of NGC 3718 is fascinating. How did the arms get so splayed? What kind of close drive-by happened??

Links didn't copy very well sadly, but the first image has a bow tie at the top. Second image has an edge on that looks like a bow tie seen edge on! The question was posted here: http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=271742.0

I think there's some connection of it with NGC3628.A shape likes ▆▅▃▂▁▂▃▃▅▆▇.

Wow, people have been busy here while I was away on Planet Hunters. Thanks for contributing, much appreciated! 😃
I've been caught up in a lot of work on PH lately. I hope to spend some time again on Galaxy Zoo soon.Posted

That is one interesting video.Posted

Her is a picture of a couple of shell galaxies in Pisces:
To the left: Arp 227: The shell galaxy NGC 474 and its blue, spiral-armed neighbor NGC 470.
To the right: NGC 467

Continuing this discussion from cappella, who started this discussion. I also found a number of galaxies shaped like a bowtie and I will post them here. Is there a scientific explanation for their shape? Are they a a subclass of elliptical galaxies? Are they a subclass at all? This Galaxy Zoo volunteer will stick up for them.

Wow these are stunning demonstrations of orbital dynamics in these galaxies. They're mostly S0 types (ie. smooth discs), and what you're seeing is patterns of orbits in the potential of the galaxy. So stunning. If I can find time I'll write a longer explanation for the blog and point to this collection.
