Nice to have somewhere to chat... As now I've managed to stop crying over the closure of GZF (it meant a lot to me), I'd like to thank Zookeeper Chris and then 'blow my own trumpet'.
I've been more and more active on Wikipedia (almost exclusively on GZ topics), and after reading Chris L.'s Twitter page:
(quoting from May 1st) "Wow! @RoyalSociety is offering wikipedia editors with a strong track record access to their journals! 24 Wikipedians to get 1 year #free access to @royalsociety & @NASciences prestigious science journals", I put my name down for a free subscription to the Royal Society. Why not?6 weeks later I've been emailed that I've been given a year's free access to the Royal Society's journals! Nice! This has much to do with GZ, as without those objects, I wouldn't be editing Wiki! My latest activity is updating the 'Hanny's Voorwerp' article, which at the moment is out-of-date and pretty dreadful (any comments welcome).
So, self-congratulatory posting over! Back to Wiki!

by JeanTate in response to Capella05's comment.
Here are a few (in no particular order):
-
limit each # to just one page (I see you're currently up to #2). Silly as it sounds, it took me a while to realize that there can more than one page ๐ฎ Also, if Search finds one of your how-to's, it won't take you to the page the text searched on is on (so if there's just one page ...)
-
add a note about PMs: you'll see ALL your PMs, no matter from which v2 Talk Zooniverse project they were sent (it can come as a bit of a shock to realize someone is PMing you from SpaceWarps, say, while you're busily reading GZ Talk)
-
have someone else do a spell check/etc (i.e. proof read); autocorrect is nice, but it is sometimes wrong, and sometimes misses stuff (e.g. "Lets" when you meant to write "Let's")
-
in that vein: if you're referring to Talk (the feature), always capitalize it, reserving "talk" for its usual meaning
-
"I think it is really important to point out that SkyServer / NED and SINBAD are not always correct! I have seen stars classified as galaxies and visa versa." this is a great learning opportunity! NED itself does little adjudication, it is mostly about collecting everything it can find about every object, from every catalog and paper, ever! It also has some nice value-adds. However, some of the references are quite old, so it's no surprise they're 'wrong'; this too is great for learning ... why did they get it wrong 50 years' ago? (also, typo SIMBAD)
Hope this helps.

You're welcome! ๐
One more: there are ~five, mutually incompatible Message platforms: v2 Talk, v1 Talk (e.g. used by Planet Hunters), and the three (?) remaining forums (SSW, MoonZoo, OldWeather). Perhaps the most confusing is that v1 and v2 Talks are the same in the sense that a Message sent in any Zooniverse project can be read when you're logged in in any other that shares it, but v1 is blind to v2 (and vice versa). Likely it's mostly a problem for newbies who are checking different projects out, and for those quite familiar with one and then put their toe in the water of another.

Another image test (to adjust image size):

Well, this doesn't work - how do you specify image size.
In the defunct forum you could look at other people's code and see how they posted their images but that doesn't appear to be possible on Talk.
Posted
-
by elizabeth_s in response to GeoffRoynon's comment.
Yes that is true you cannot quote other post like you could on the old forum which is kind of a bummer. It was a great way to learn how to do it. Here you need all the help you can get to do it and practice. ๐

Hello. ๐
Blockquote Yes that is true you cannot quote other post like you could on the old forum which is kind of a bummer. It was a great way to learn how to do it. Here you need all the help you can get to do it and practice.
Testing to see what the block quote feature does.
Posted
-
by klmasters scientist, admin
So note to self - delete "Block quote".
It's just the ">" symbol in front of words which makes them a quote. A little less intuitive that a button I agree! ๐
Posted
-
by GeoffRoynon in response to klmasters's comment.
What we mean by quoting other people's posts in the defunct forum is that you could see the BBcode that had been used in the other person's post. So if they posted an image with size specifications that would show up in the quoted post and you could see how they had managed to post that particular image. In Talk there's no way of finding out how someone else has modified an image to produce a specific size.
Posted
-
by elizabeth_s in response to GeoffRoynon's comment.
Hi, Geoff I have been on this TALK and others for awhile. I am moderator over on Plankton Portal. But I have only use the recent board to communicate. So actually trying to use TALK is a learning Experience.

Here's an example of code stolen from the Moon Zoo forum using the "Quote" function which shows how to size an image and also uses the 'Table' construct:
Three of the highly commended entries (all from the UK) were lunar photos:

Posted
-
by elizabeth_s in response to Budgieye's comment.
cool ๐ but how did you do it?
Posted
-
by JeanTate in response to elizabeth's comment.
Putting an image into a post? Or producing smaller images?
The former: clicking the image icon brings up a pop-up, into which you can copy (or type, or ...) the URL (=link) of the image. Works similarly to posting images in the GZ forum.
The latter: the image size is controlled by the source, Flickr in this case (?). The first, small, image is 75x75pix; the latter 375x500pix. These sizes come from the image source, not anything done in HTML in Talk.
By the way, you can get a lot of info about images, using Firefox: put your cursor over the image, right-click, select "View Image Info", and you get - in a new window - its location (i.e. URL), type (JPEG, in this case), size (in bytes), and 'Dimensions' (which I'd've called size! the number of pixels, in x and y directions). I imagine there's similar functionality in other browsers.

cool! Thanks I will work on it. It would be nice to have a place to try things out with out going off topic in a thread.

Over on the Talk Formatting thread Arfon said that image tags in HTML aren't supported, though the last time I tried it they worked fine:
<IMG SRC="http://www.galaxyzoo.org.s3.amazonaws.com/subjects/standard/1237661083193442789.jpg" WIDTH="250">
will, if supported, make an image of the #beardedalien that's 250 pixels in width (and scaled properly in height, since I didn't specify).
(If the end of that tag is getting cut off it just had a WIDTH="250" and an ending > sign.)As long as that image is still showing up the tag is still unofficially supported; so it works as a last resort right now but may break at any time.
The only thing I'd add to that is just to be careful as a mistake in this tag can break the way the page displays... but if you absolutely need to re-size an image and can't find another way, it might work.

Well good that you looked now, did you see the double star? And as you'll know know, it's great in the Northern hemisphere for locating Polaris ๐
Posted

Nope. I actually just looked around the big dipper a bit, found a star that looked a bit like Polaris, aimed my telescope at it and waited for it to move out of view, which it of course didn't. I was going to look around the area more but then you came up, nearly full, and ruined the rest of my hope of observing any fainter stars with your brightness. ๐ xD

I am positively melting!
Here in the UK our houses are designed to keep in the heat (being 51 deg N after all ๐ ) - when we get a heatwave, they turn into ovens - not pleasant. 10 pm at night and I am still recording 34 degrees ๐ฆ

I also want to say, looking back on my PMs I recovered from early in galaxy zoo, I'm looking at some of these and thing, "Man, I must have sounded so stupid back then." and I remember thinking how mature I was when I first went on the forums, but in the (nearly) year that I've spent, I've learned much more than just the difference between a star and galaxy, and thank everyone here for helping me with that endeavor.

I just noticed your thread. The AAAS will finalize their program for the San Jose meeting and open registration in August, so more information will be available within a couple weeks. We don't know yet which day of the AAAS meeting (12th-16th Feb.) that this will be on, but we should find out soon. You might need to register to attend, but maybe there will be other options. I haven't heard any cancellations among our speakers, so it looks like we'll confirm all six of them, but I want to be sure before we announce them.

Do you know if those who register to attend will have to pay a fee as well? If so, how much is it likely to be?
The current registration page seems to suggest that most ordinary zooites would have to pay $399 (as non-AAAS members, and not Postdocs, K-12 Teachers, or Emeritus), or $90 if they are Students (presumably university, not high school or college).
There also seem to be huge benefits and opportunities for university students, but ordinary zooites who are not such students?
Student Opportunities
The Annual Meeting provides many opportunities for students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Present in the Student Poster Competition to get feedback on your research from leading scientists and engineers. Register to attend the meeting for a reduced student rate or serve as a session aide to receive free registration and an online subscription to Science.

well good gosh was just about to hit the sack when this hit. An earthquake with magnitude 6.0 occurred near American Canyon, CA at 10:20:44.10 UTC on Aug 24, 2014. Chipper has been with me for about 20+ years and has a new name Chipper Firebird. Due to the nice lady who saved him from the fire that burnt down the house where I was living. He is my watch bird. Capella, you should see how helpless I am with southern constellations. I did a show in a planetarium last week, which was able to show the southern sky, (unlike the one I work in) and I could only point out the Southern Cross and Alpha Centauri. I had spent a hour poring over star charts beforehand, but that wasn't enough. I offered the red arrow to anyone in the audience who could do them for me, but there were no takers.

The farther you travel to a star party, the greater the probability of being clouded out. I am going to one Friday night, but I am in the dome, and the telescopes are outside. It is actually forecast to be clear! But perhaps I will see Neptune for the first time. The Milky Way should be visible by 9pm.

The winter is my favorite constellation-spotting season in the northern hemisphere! ๐ We do some telescope evenings and stargazing stuff in Oxford, but for things further south you might ask Karen?
Plus there is some in-city stargazing going on... I think the Idler Academy runs some events in London (though they charge as far as I know).

The star party had mostly clear skies. The public saw Ring Nebula, Albireo ( double star- blue and yellow), M13 star cluster, Andromeda galaxy. The lights around the building were switched off, and we could see the dark dust lane in the Milky Way. No Moon, so the sky was dark. When the lights were switched on, we could hardly see the brightest stars. I still haven't seen Neptune. I used my green laser to outline constellations for 5 minutes, that always impresses people when they see a long light going up into the sky.
Only twice in my life have I seen the Milky Way so bright that I didn't notice the stars. This time wasn't one of them. It was noticeable, but not overwhelming. It was in farmland, and that isn't dark enough.
See the Milky Way in 2014: go to mountains (not farmland nor coast) when the Moon isnโt up.

The description of this section Science Powered by Citizens reads:
"A sounding board / contemplation area for our serious Citizens Scientists. All other posts will be moved / removed. For questions on the object you have classified, please post in Help/ The Objects - Thanks ๐"
Is this condescending and unnecessary? Or have we been over this ground? It does seem somewhat elitist- so what if someone posts a stray discussion? Who counts as a serious CS? Who decides? It just seems to me that it is somewhat exclusive rather than inclusive.
So I've posted this to ask for a chat about it.

Unfortunately it can't be changed. There is no function on the GUI to allow board descriptions to be edited.
Like you said we have been over this before, so I do not know why you have brought this up again? When I created the board, I never realized that I would be unable to edit it, and frankly I would also like to change it. So I guess we are stuck with it until the new version of Talk is complete.

Dr Who : I was very disappointed in the Moon episode of Dr Who, the geology of the moon left a lot to be desired... I watched in total disbelief.

by Budgieye moderator in response to Capella05's comment.
Farscape: I found out that John Creighton is not a "Right Stuff" astronaut, but more of tinkering workshop genius, which makes sense because he learns very quickly how to use alien technology. But he feels inferior to his heroic Moon-walking Dad. I wish I had known this as I watched the final series, the plots would have made more sense. Farscape is the name of his experimental spaceship, I didn't know that either. I loved the scene of him staring over the sea to the space shuttle in the early morning, before he is due to go up, it was the real shuttle on location I think.

I quite enjoyed Farscape! It's available on US Netflix. A friend made me watch the whole series... Quite good! One would definitely want to start watching from the beginning, though, or many things wouldn't make sense.

I must admit I am enjoying watching Farscape more now, than when I originally watched it. If you live in the UK and have freeview, they seem to be repeating the episodes quite frequently on PickTV (channel 11).
I was always more of a Firefly fan myself ๐ It is such a pity they aired the episodes in the wrong order, I think that blunder alone led to it's demise.
As for Dr Who - I have never been able to get into it, even when David Tennant was the doctor. It seems to be a bit like marmite - lol ๐

Are you sure that is an image of Sedna ? On the wikipage is a Hubble image and the resolution is a lot lower than the SDSS image which isn't logical at all.
Posted
-
by planetaryscience in response to ElisabethB's comment.
I am 100% sure it is an image of Sedna. The difference between the Hubble and SDSS images is that the pixels on the Hubble image are much higher resolution and are actually so high-resolution that the actual size of Sedna can be resolved. However the SDSS images, while approximately as sensitive to light, aren't nearly as high-resolution as Hubble and the size you see there isn't actual size, much like the apparent size of stars you see in SDSS images even though they are much, much smaller.
Meanwhile, using the same method I used to find Sedna, I was also able to find images of scattered disc object 2004 XR190, with the third largest perihelion of any non-comet in the Solar system (53 AU), although unlike Sedna, which at the time the image was taken, magnitude 20.8, 2004 XR190 was ~22.1, near the limits of SDSS resolution. Also, while the image of Sedna was over a year after Sedna was discovered, the SDSS image of 2004 XR190 was taken nearly two years before it was discovered or even first observed!

Anyways the method I used, quite abridged from my original explanation, was to put the jpl ephemeris location into SDSS images, look at the MJD, if it's not the date of the location, keep going until I get a SDSS image from the same date the ephemeris was on.

Yep, an unresolved KBO in SDSS might look like a star, whereas HST can -- barely, it seems -- resolve it.
I'm actually surprised the resolution isn't better with HST. But then I don't actually know much about Sedna at all! ๐
In other news, I have now caught up to Doctor Who as far as Netflix would let me. Enjoyed The Day of the Doctor but only because things just haven't been the same since David Tennant, and he came back for that one.
Posted

well I'm not much surprised by the resolution, because Sedna is about 1000 kilometers in diameter, and is about 13800000000 kilometers away, giving it a resolution of 0.006 arcseconds.

The last post here was 2 weeks ago, so I'm derailing the chat to whinge for a minute. Like a nerd diva. I promise to put the thread right back where I found it.
Got the questionnaire in order to participate in the Oxford Internet Institute / Galaxy zoo study I read about a while ago, and the week after I got the questions we discovered a health problem (not major, just ongoing) in the family that consumed lots of time and energy since then. I thought I'd take some time tonight to finally, finally get back to the researcher, but when I responded with a quick "still there?" email I got an automated response that the email account is scheduled for deletion. I looked at the original email and saw that it was sent to me in July!
This crazy "real life" thing keeps getting in the way of the things I want to do! It couldn't be helped, but it's depressing to the nerdy part of me- I was looking forward to filling out that questionnaire...
Anyway, I promised only to whinge for a minute. I'm off to find galaxies to tag for the Zooniverse Galaxy of the Week.
Back to your regularly scheduled chat... @Capella05 mentioned Farscape, and if you haven't seen it, you should! The episodes "John Quixote" and "Crackers Don't Matter" are not to be missed. Pure fun madness. ๐

Its ARG ID is ARG0001xiw. I do not know if it has a GZ ID, but it was in GZ1, so it may appear in the GZ forum; its SDSS name is SDSS J164924.01+263502.5; here is the DR10 version:
And the FIRST contour overlay image:
Boilerplate: The contour overlay image in this post was created from sources, and using methods, described in this RGZ Talk post. The object at the center of the image is SDSS J164924.01+263502.5.

To clarify: super-zooite zutopian posted it on June 14, 2014, 05:59:47 am, in the Friday, 21 February, 2014: Very Strange Spirals? OOTD thread, having found that it was presented at the 223rd AAS meeting. It had been hinted at earlier (March 01, 2014) by NGC3314, in the same thread.
The DR8/9/10 ObjId is 1237662301913940522, and as far as I can tell only zutopian posted it. It may have a DR7 ObjId, and if so is likely to have been posted in the GZ forum earlier (it's a quite strange-looking spiral).

630pm onwards going home time is 11pm Entry to the Park is by the Monkey gate best advice is bring a Torch for the path although it is often Lit best to be visible a Parks Police officer is one of the Irregulars so will be present!.
The 274 Bus From CAMDEN TOWN takes you to WELL RISE then cross the Canal and the Monkey gate is rite In front of you!

Which gate is the monkey gate? I would arrive at Regents Park underground station.
Posted
-
Best not to go to Regents park underground as that is way over the other side of the Park on the south side and only the Monkey gate is open at Night.on the North side.
If you get too Wells Rise 274 BUS which is on the North side of the Park and walk across the CANAL Bridge the Monkey gate is directly in front of you

You will need a Tripod as they are all heavy neck breakers,
I use a Spotting scope that Jules gave me has a 90mm front Lens and a zoom from 25-75x which is no longer made although Bresser make an 80mm version with a zoom from 25x-115x
A lot of astronomers use the 15x 70mm but i have found the 25x70mm is not really bright enough for Astronomy as the extra magnification soaks up the Light .
A Set of 20X80 / 30x80 will allow you too see a lot on the Moon and just about see the rings around saturn at 30X80.
As for Jupiter they will not show a lot as the Planet will be too small the moons will be visible, They will show some galaxies and other stuff.

For Brits, The Sky at Night is on this Sunday night 10pm on BBC4, don't know why it is on a different channel. Hubble Space Telescope images, the topic is.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05qyqwb
The presenter (and head zookeeper), Dr Chris Lintott is on the left, other presenter is Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock
I don't know if non-Brits can watch it on BBC iplayer. Right now, they are showing an old episode from 1960, where Patrick Moore considers whether the craters on the Moon are caused by volcanoes or meteors, and the first glimpse of the other side of the Moon.

Just back from the RAS Picnic, where we had hot sunny weather, with a lot of people around.
About 30 people turned up, including a Dutchman who being at a loose end, looked on the internet, to see what was on in London, astronomy-wise. Jerry Stone turned up with his solar telescopes and we had a look at sunspots and a prominence which seemed to grow larger and smaller as we looked at it.
Afterwards we went over to Blackheath (where there was a funfair) and launched water rockets, they went quite high.
Hope to publish some photos later.
For those who know me, the operation has now been replaced by an injection.

Hi Everyone,
Been a bit busy the past few days, but all discussions with regards too Moon Zoo are best done on Zooniverse Talk - I think Geoff made a thread (but I cant find it at present!) so please feel free to post your comments there .
Galaxy Zoo Talk is now just for Galaxy Zoo related questions / comments, so if you have a problem with how a different project is managed / run / communicated - then please raise it on the project in question, or on the Zooniverse board! You will get quicker response time (and cut out the middle man ๐ ) if you post there, and please make sure to tag @DZM in the post!
I know this is different from what you are used too, but the Zooniverse is evolving, and from what I have heard / seen over the past two days I am very excited, and very positive for the future ๐

Because a computer has to decide whether a space is a zero value or a mistake when reading a line of text, if the file name is all_one_continuous_line_of_text then it is read quicker and uses less processing. Certainly on a more macro scale it makes sense to lessen processor power to ease server traffic. Whether that was a factor in banning spaces I wouldn't guess at.

Rick, when I developed my three public web sites, I put spaces in URL file names, then I couldn't work out, whether I had one or two spaces, so I found putting underscores in was the best solution.

There does seem a lot of non-space projects coming along.
I have put a comment in Zooniverse/Talk about the SKA programme (http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/research/ska/). When it comes on line, it will produce a lot of data, the majority of which will be dumped. So, I don't know whether any of the "dumped" data, could make a Zooniverse space project, may have to wait and see.

For Brits, BBC The Sky at Night has a special on "The Star of Bethlehem" Wed Dec 30 at 9 pm, rerun at 1 am
The usual format for these SOB shows is:
What is a supernova? it is not a supernova
What is a comet? it is not a comet
Maybe a conjunction of two planets, important in astrology. Or maybe not.

Answer on SAN, was that the SOB was a comet.

Yes, I had never heard that the Chinese had a comet listed for that period. I wonder why the Assyrians didn't have it listed along with their conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. But I liked the recurring nova theory too.

I will say that classifying the simulated ones are really valuable for us, and will allow us to do some unique science. But we do know it's not everyone's cup of tea. The simulated images have actually been only about 1% of all the images we've ever shown on Galaxy Zoo (16,000 out of almost 1.8 million), and the GZ team has emphasized the importance of keeping real galaxies on the site as much as possible.

The bubbles are faint but large patches of X-rays in the sky. Hardly visible from our galaxy, they would be harder to see in distant galaxies. It seems likely that all spiral galaxies would have them?

This artist's conception shows an edge-on view of the Milky Way galaxy. Newly discovered gamma-ray jets (pink) extend for 27,000 light-years above and below the galactic plane, and are tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. Previously known gamma-ray bubbles are shown in purple. The bubbles and jets suggest that our galactic center was much more active in the past than it is today.

For Brits, Stephen Hawking is on The Sky At Night tomorrow (Sunday Apr 10, BBC4) on Black Holes. Repeated Thursday 7;30. Also on iplayer (for Brits only, I think)
The programme looks at the latest understanding of black holes, featuring an interview with Stephen Hawking. Black holes are one of the greatest mysteries in the universe. They behave in a way that is contrary to laws of physics and one has never actually been seen. However, the recent detection of gravitational waves, as predicted by Einstein, proves that black holes exist and provides a way to investigate their remarkable behaviour and properties. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b077ryr3

Big sunspot AR2529 is now directly facing Earth, giving solar astronomers a clear view of the behemoth active region. This morning, April 13th, Karzaman Ahmad of the Langkawi National Observatory in Malaysia took a closer look and found that the sunspot is shaped like a heart.
Ahmad inserted a picture of Earth to show the scale of the sunspot. The primary dark core is several times wider than our entire planet. You have to love a sunspot with those kind of dimensions.http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=13&month=04&year=2016

Is what going to extinction? For what it's worth I've downloaded the SPOGS sample catalog as well as all spectra from the sample. There are quite a few false positives, which to their credit they acknowledge and discuss at some length.
I also suspect the database the SPOGS team used for line strengths has some rather large errors at least for some critical absorption lines.
How do you think zooites could add value to the sample? With morphological classifications? That was the objective of the first part of the Quench project, which has not (to date at least) produced scientifically useful results.
Posted

I was mearly posing a question on how long my fellow volunteers could have gone through the data not thinking of how we could have added to the Data adding the link was mearly to show my fellow zooites what the project is about nothing more.

Listen to the Zooniverse
Recently, during one of our regular "hack days", Zooniverse lead
front-end developer Jim O'Donnell created 'Listen to the Zooniverse'.
Based on a similar page for Wikipedia edits, it allows you to listen
to the classifications and Talk comments as they come in from all
across the Zooniverse. It's actually very relaxing (I have it on while
I work most days now), and it's great to think that every time you
hear a sound, that's a brand new contribution to research! Listen

I had a timid look at computer settings, but gave up, and hoped that it was an outside problem. It is hard to find out information such as "Why doesn't my internet work?" when the internet doesn't work ๐ I eventually found the teletext service on TV mentioned some problems with BT, so I just waited.

On another note : here's a fun thing from SN Hunters (for me ! ) :
Your classifications helped us discover a superluminous supernova in last week's data! Thanks to a massive effort, all of the data was classified within 24 hours and in time for PESSTO. This new object is known as SN 2016els and is now in the follow-up queue for PESSTO, which means we will continue to gather data on it. This is a rare find as only about 50 superluminous supernovae have ever been discovered! By studying this supernova in detail we hope to help explain what drives these explosions to be 10-100 times brighter than normal supernovae.
Links to the classification ATel and TNS report where you can see the classification spectrum are in the Results section of the project. Thanks to: 'TED91' 'nilium' 'voyager1682002' 'ElisabethB' 'PreJhTrg' 'BLGoodwin' 'chrostek' 'qbpd' 'MerylPG' 'smbush' 'toxiko' 'Melina_t' 'Miss-Moo' 'Pixelstain' 'tango'
who all contributed to the discovery of this supernova.
So, although I'm not in the top 3 of the discoverers, the SN is called : SN2016els ! ๐
For people wanting to participate in SN Hunters : The new data are uploaded every Tuesday at around 2 pm Belgium time(UTC +2).

The thought just occurred to me, does a citizen scientist (I.e. Zysyx) have a spiral-ID sidedness? In other words, is it likely that I am more able/apt to identify a "clockwise" spiral than a "counterclockwise"? It would be interesting to track that error factor among the many others probably already being tracked. ๐ It's an excellent challenge to ID giant objects given a square cm of pixel info! ๐

Galaxy Zoo certainly started with an experiment on clockwise / anticlockwise. See

Thanks for the link. Lots to delve into! I was thinking about Mels' zoom/filter image alterations, and was wondering how much human bias affects the data- (handedness, written language heritage (reading left to right etc), colorblindness and so forth)- then envisioning flipping and mirroring the datasets and tracking the morphological IDs and seeing if they differ. Something to do once all the other projects are complete ๐ word of the day: chirality! Thanks again.

For Brits: The Vatican's telescope. This month's episode of The Sky at Night is on BBC4 Sunday June 11 at 10:00pm. It has a different title, so my recorder won't recognize the title and won't record it automatically.
, the Specola Vaticana, perched on a hilltop 30km outside Rome.
There they explore its rich history and contemporary cutting-edge
science, going inside the Vatican walls to visit the Tower of the
Winds, a secret antique sundial that revolutionised the length of the
year; the remains of a nest of telescopes atop an old medieval church
where the science of spectroscopy was born; and the modern labs,
manned by priest scientists who study a range of contemporary
astronomical problems, from meteorites to binary stars to the birth of
the universe itself.http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08v8ckz

It was well presented . The buildings were pretty. Some of the priests were quite humorous.
Topics were
1582 Calculation of the length of the year and correction to the Julian calendar to make the Gregorian calendear
1633 - Galileo's trial and how it is misunderstood ( I don't have much sympathy for Galileo. His maths did not accurately predict the movement of the planets, but he ignored that little problem, and presented it as correct. Too bad that he ignored Kepler )
1853 - spectroscopy - Secchi . present: Lambda Boo stars
Castel Gandalfo
1890s history of production of Carte du Ciel which currently is being reexamined for changes in the sky
Belgian (cough) priest Georges Lemaรฎtre, who proposed an expanding Universe before Hubble and calculated a Hubble constant before Hubble did.
Creation: Theoretic calculations of Planck Era ( the first billionth, billionth, ...second) and Quantum Gravity

I've posted it at the Backyard Worlds Google groups. Then at The Milky Way Project. And then at Radio Galaxy Zoo. And now I'm thinking of posting it here as a last resort. Not because of I don't think people here might be able to judge the question, but more because it is Infrared / radio related.

Galaxy Zoo - original and subsequent - has resulted in LOTS of papers. ๐ And a handful of volunteers are co-authors on several of these (i.e not just mentioned in the Acknowledgements section). Across all astronomy (and planetary science) Zooinverse projects, there were over a dozen last time I looked, with a few as co-authors of papers from more than one project (Els is one such, IIRC).
Much rarer are papers - based on an astronomy Zooniverse project (I have no idea about other projects) - with a volunteer (i.e. not a formal member of the project's Science Team) as lead author ... if memory serves me correctly, there's at least one Planet Hunters one. Maybe some reader can point to others?

Hmm, I think that since galaxyzoo.org now forwards to the new project, the links to Examine are all broken.
For the moment, you can still access pages by substituting
zoo4.galaxyzoo.org
forwww.galaxyzoo.org
. So for the object above, if you manually copy the link to Examine and change it fromhttp://www.galaxyzoo.org/#/examine/AGZ000am9n
tohttp://zoo4.galaxyzoo.org/#/examine/AGZ000am9n
, it does load.I can't promise that will work forever, though -- at some point this site will be converted into a static website and then I suspect Examine might break completely.

OK thanks for the info. Examine saved some time but there are other ways and means. I guess this site will become read-only like the Forum - there's some great astronomy on this site that should be secured. Personally I like GZ Panoptes and it seems to work well enough. Some good astronomy happening there for sure.
If this site does become read-only, can a few days notice be given beforehand? A note on GZ Panoptes might be handy ๐

Yes, the idea is to preserve all of the info that's here (so, so much really great stuff) in a way that relieves the pressure of having to maintain the aging codebase. I don't know what the timeline for that looks like at the moment but I'll try to keep people updated over on the new Talk.
In the meantime, Mike Walmsley (GZ PhD student at Oxford) has been doing a great job of keeping the subject metadata filled with info in the new subject sets, so the "i" info/metadata button there should contain lots of information and links to e.g. SDSS SkyServer pages and so on. That won't help with the version of Examine that's on this site, but it should do the trick moving forward! ๐

Have you ever looked at a galaxy in SDSS and wondered what other galaxies in the whole survey are most similar to it? @Dennis_Turp made an ML tool to find them! Try it out, and give feedback! โฆ http://ec2-18-188-98-32.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/ enter link description here

This part of an Email made me sit up and say What "The counts are in โ over the last fortnight you, our Galaxy Zoo volunteers, have contributed an incredible 50,253 classifications! Thank you for joining in and helping us! " Compared to the old days of the First Zoo that is hardly a drop in a Bucket.
