A new paper on the value of citizen science - featuring Galaxy Zoo

    Hi all,

I enjoyed this paper by Watson & Floridi (2016) that describes the advantages of a citizen science approach to science over more traditional research (under the right conditions, of course). It discusses Galaxy Zoo as an example case and highlights the incredible ability of the community to make discoveries that professional researchers missed. It also analyzes Zooniverse publications in terms of their impact on the larger scientific community and concludes that, pound for pound, Zooniverse papers are much more impactful than average, and in fact are consistent with the impact of work done collectively by institutes at the top of their field (the specific comparison is to the IoA at Cambridge).

The author also wrote a guest blog post for the Zooniverse on the paper. The post and the paper are both well worth a read, in my opinion. Well done, all!

    Cheers,
    -Brooke
