Galaxy Zoo 10th Anniversary

  • ElisabethB by ElisabethB moderator

Yep, it is the 10th Anniversary of Galaxy Zoo very soon !

And to celebrate this, the science team has organized a conference which you can follow on line !

    Here's the schedule :

    enter image description here

There will also be a public event (see the schedule) , but don't worry if you are not in the Oxford area, that one will also be available online.

Thanks everyone for your contributions and thank you for an amazing 10 years ! Here's to many more ! πŸ˜„

Not sure I'll be elligible for the Monday, but I can try! I guess they might need a Wikipedia citizen science correspondent ... That's my pitch anyway. Something I'd love to be at. GZ has changed my life since September 2007 and has led to so much.

I can see that I'll be getting up very early for three days that week! πŸ˜ƒ

Has it been suggested that we GZooites can submit questions ahead of time, to specific presenters or in general?

Also, what are the "Unconference/Hack n" events?

Sorry, but I'll not be there ! I really don't want to spend all that money on a night at the pub !

Yes, I think I saw somewhere that you can post your questions ahead of time. Don't really recall where. Must do some digging ! πŸ˜„

Couldn't get a freebie... A Β£125 day rate to see the speakers is too expensive for me... Guess I won't see you there!

  • ElisabethB by ElisabethB moderator in response to ElisabethB's comment.

Sorry, must have misread something as I can't seem to find anything about getting your questions in ahead of time.

    Posted

  • JeanTate by JeanTate

Maybe it's what's implied in this, from the GZ blog post?

but the good news is that all of the talks from the meeting will be interactively live-streamed so that anyone can join in the discussion!

"interactively" and "anyone can join in" suggest that those of us who will be remote have a chance to ask questions ... just not submit them ahead of time.

Or maybe there'll be something about 'ahead of time questions' later?

Details of how to join the live stream will be released closer to the event.

    Posted

  • ElisabethB by ElisabethB moderator in response to JeanTate's comment.

Must be something like that ! πŸ˜„

Also, this is a GZ Ten (years) conference . So, I don't think they will be taking questions about the Zooniverse in general. (But I am in no way involved, so I could be wrong).

Celebrating 10 Years of Galaxy Zoo
Mon, Jul 10 at 4:30am - Wed, Jul 12 at 7:44am EST Science & Technology

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of Galaxy Zoo, we are hosting a workshop on galaxy morphology. The focus is on the extragalactic astrophysics derived from morphological labelling, rather than the techniques of citizen science themselves, with major themes including morphological evolution, quenching, and the effect of bars. Forthcoming and ongoing projects which look beyond the optical, consider morphology within simulations and plan for human-machine collaboration for the vast surveys planned in the coming decades will be discussed. Connections to large IFU surveys such as MaNGA will also be discussed. The format will be short talks in the morning, with collaborative working time in the afternoon. A public event to celebrate the 10th Birthday of Galaxy Zoo will also take place on Monday 10th July at 7pm at St. Aldates Tavern.

So good I think they're worth repeating. First one:

I would like to encourage the scientists to participate more on Talk. For myself, it is a difficult and discouraging task to inspire enthusiasm and scientific curiosity when there is little or no feedback from scientists whose galaxies we are classifying, especially if there are no databases I can consult.

    Second:

I want a Zooniverse Sky Map, where any discussions can be pinned.. When an object in the sky is discussed in any of the astronomy groups in Zooniverse, a placemark can be placed on the object. So at a glance, users can see if an object has been discussed in other zoos, or discussed using different identifications or slightly different locations. So I can see what has been said about this object already, and not do the basic research again or search different versions of Galaxy Zoo under many IDs.

    To which Chris Lintott replied:

Talking about talk is important – we’re talking about ways to make sure the science team pay more attention. And I like the cross-zoo idea, too – that should be possible given the current system. Will do some digging…

    Third comment:

Will Galaxy Zoo Talk be updated soon? If it can’t, can the arrangement subject area be changed. When a newbie finishes a classification and clicks on β€œWould you like to discuss this object?”, the galaxy image on Talk pops up. Unfortunately, the previous comments are hidden and needs to be scrolled up to see them. Can the comments be raised to the top of the page, and collections and tags put under the image? example this β€œsupernova” post https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/subjects/AGZ000d9vc
Even this one change would be greatly appreciated.

I found many of the talks hard to understand. The lecture was aimed at the scientist level. There were lots of graphs, they came very fast, and they were a bit dim and fuzzy, and the scientist talked at the same time. I assume the scientists have seen most of it before, so it would be a review for them. But the conference was for scientists, not for the citizen science volunteers.

It would take me a long time to understand all of what was said, understand its significance and realize where the research should lead.

I wonder how long the recorded videos will be available? Time for me to do a little catch-up?

Budgieye, was the live blogging helpful in understanding the talks?

This was indeed intended as a normal science team meeting (or at least that was my understanding), which are common among science teams but which GZ hasn't had many of. Science talks often go by fast (and have fuzzy plots, etc) even for the scientists in the room!

The idea was that the tweets and live blogging would accompany that and give further explanation. How are the blog posts reading?

    Posted

  • JeanTate by JeanTate in response to Budgieye's comment.

    You are most welcome! πŸ˜ƒ

I found all three both very pertinent and succinct. To add my few poor words:

    • I find the participation of scientists - whether on a project's Science Team or not - in Talk to be puzzling. There seems to be a lot of involvement at the beginning, but it quickly tapers off. It seems that some scientists (Ivy Wong of RGZ, for example) do try to drop by regularly, and engage in discussions, post links about new developments, etc ... but otherwise it's feast (like now!) or famine
    • I was a little bit surprised by Lee Kelvin's comments, in his presentation (Day 1); he said he enjoyed dropping in to Talk and engaging in discussions ...
    • Bill Keel's comment about being kept notified (by mods) of interesting objects (this goes to the question of why serendipitous discoveries have all but dried up) is good ... except that, in my experience, even he can be too tied up with other stuff to respond (and it seems he now has no one to turn to)
    • your cross-project Sky Map idea is a great one! πŸ˜„ As you well know, there are several people who do try to do cross-matches (especially you), but it can be hit-and-miss and is certainly time-consuming. The resources to have a capability like Sky Map surely already exist ... they just need to be stitched together ...
    • Talk has been a sore spot ever since it was introduced (and the old GZ Forum shut down). The Panoptes Talks are certainly better than this Ouroboros one (a Search function which actually works, for example), but IMHO they are still far short of the ease of use etc of the GZ Forum. I feel it's particularly unfortunate that the excellent summary material you (in particular) prepare is all-too-often invisible, and even difficult to reference when replying to a newbie's inquiry (totally unlike in the GZ Forum, of course).

The pub talks were done in partnership with a local organisation who do these events regularly, and I believe they're the ones who recorded the presentations. Galaxy Zoo in the Pub
    by The Zooniverse
Many fantastic discussions take place in pubs. In fact, depending on who you listen to, the original idea to build Galaxy Zoo came from a discussion in a pub! So what better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the project than to host an evening of talks and discussions in the pub?

That's exactly what we did last Monday, with the help of Oxford SciBar. There were seven speakers in total and you can watch all of their talk on YouTube via the this link

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2hREI-x4WI&list=PLchXp2IKn1Ne3ktFGqG3getPfulOJsTrK

NOTE: The are in seven separate parts, and the video above is only part 1. The talk schedule is as follows:

Part 1 - Intro from Grant Miller, and Bill Keel talking about Hanny's Voorwerp

Part 2 - Brooke Simmons talking about black holes

Part 3 - Sandor Kruk talking about galaxy bars

Part 4 - Alice Shepherd talking about irregular galaxies and the community

Part 5 - Becky Smethurst talking about blue elliptical galaxies

Part 6 - Karen Masters talking about red spiral galaxies

Part 7 - Chris Lintott talking about dust, and other interesting stuff.
