Black star?

  • ratprincess by ratprincess

I saw the image of this "star" (SDSS Object Id: 123767464884810583) with a "spectrum" oscillating around 0 F lamda .

    What am I looking at?

You appear to be looking at nothing. For some reason SDSS targeted a patch of blank sky for spectroscopy.

Actually every plate has some sky fibers but they shouldn't show up in Navigate as science targets.

Notice that spectrum was taken on MJD 51908 = 30/12/2000 at least 6 months after the photometric pipeline target selection for the time of drilling a plate and plugging spectrograph fibers.

Image has MJD 54210= 20/4/2007 and the transient event (asteroid or satellite trail which confused the spectrum target selection) had gone more than 7 years ago.

We are left with sky noise! 😃
