Links to Talk threads not working
-
So here is a problem i've had for a very long time now; when someone provides a link to a thread inside GZ Talk, to a particular thread for instance, almost always i end up in the general 'recent' overview page.
Surprisingly, the URL describing the link is actually converted to that simple link! This happens even when i copy paste said link, which is very weird and irritating.
Example; Let's say in the Index for GZ Talk I want to go to page 1.6 Spiral.
Index startpage here; https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/?_ga=1.244656832.476670387.1443719759#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb
So i click on the link; http://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb?page=1&comment_id=53d8b7760d43f77bd6000ff2
And instead of getting there i end up here; https://talk.galaxyzoo.org
And copy-pasting the link gets the same result, the URL is simply replaced by this general URL.
This has happenend with a lot of links, i think even when i started here so it is not temporary.
Any thoughts?

trying... ummmm.... works for me, but it must be frustrating for you. Can you list your operating system and which search engine you are using?
https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/?_ga=1.244656832.476670387.1443719759#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb The takes me to the right page, though never far enough down the page, but I'm used to that.

Yes this link you provided works (to startpage of the Index), except the links in the Index themselves don't, usually the same for links to Talk threads. So the links to particular subjects in the Index do work for you?
I'm on iOS version 8.4.1 / iPhone , don't know if that should make a difference....

Can other people try this too please? If the long links, no longer work, I can use the shorter links for the top of the page. I'll give it a day, then change it. This Talk will be changed sometime in the future, so it is not worthwhile bothering the technical people about it. Which reminds me, I had better make a backup copy of the Index, sometime soon, yes.. soon. Tomorrow. ๐
This link should take you to page 1 of the Index https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/?_ga=1.244656832.476670387.1443719759#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb
This link should take you to the top of page 3 of the Index Index for Galaxy Zoo Talk: Active Galaxies, Black Holes, Gravitational Lenses http://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb?page=3
This link should take you about half way down the page 3 of the Index. It would be nice if it went directly to near the bottom, but we can't have everything 3.9 Gravitational lenses and SpaceWarps http://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb?page=3&comment_id=53d8b966db90c7620200110c

The first link to startpage of the Index works for me, the others don't (including that last one). If i am the only one shouldn't be a big problem, if others have the same problem for internal Index links and thread links in general might be something else...
No back-up for the Index.... That is uhm.... Having big confidence in the GZ supporting systems.. 8| :0

For every one person that bothers to complain, there are a hundred that don't bother.
I was thinking that the length was too long, but is the short link doesn't work, that can't be the problem.
Ooooh, and I went to so much trouble to copy the long links.
The app was developed by Oxford cosmologist Joe Zuntz, along with
Arfon Smith and Stuart Lynn. They have a bet with Chris that youโll be
able to classify 1 million galaxies with it, and hope youโll help them
win it.https://blog.galaxyzoo.org/2010/06/21/announcing-the-galaxy-zoo-iphone-app/
try pasting the address twice? Spotlight copy paste URL truncated on first try https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7557272?start=0&tstart=0

Budgieye; good news (and perhaps bad news); after fiddling around some time it looks like i've found the problem and simple solution.
I think i've finally managed to make the links work properly for me ๐ the ones i tried work with this;
I copy paste the link in a new empty web-page, but before I press 'GO' I manually change HTTP at the beginning to HTTPS.... That's all really and then they work properly ๐
(Well not the exact same location to the letter, but at least to the proper index page and very close to the particular subject)

This is a known issue where Google Analytics is not playing nice with Talk links.
GA tracks statistics in part by adding information to the end of links, e.g. a link to this page would have a string added to the end of it that the GA javascript would interpret when it loads the page.
However, sometimes when the code gets updated, GA inserts the code in the wrong place, and it causes the link to break. So, for example, the link posted at the top of the page:
https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/?_ga=1.244656832.476670387.1443719759#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb
is broken because the original link was to
https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb
and the GA code "?_ga=1.244656832.476670387.1443719759" has been inserted right after the base URL instead of at the end of the full URL.These GA links are inserted on the fly when you click, so when you're writing the post it looks like everything is fine, and then when someone clicks, it's broken.
I believe the developers have submitted a bug report to Google about it, but I'm not sure that really means anything...
Sorry to not have better news.

FYI both example links work for me, only problem arises when it's not https.

Should I convert http: links to https: links?
Have I been giving out non-working links for years, and nobody has told me about it? ๐ฆ

OK, I have manually converted these links to https
Can you try these?
The "s" in https stands for "secure" The rest I don't pretend to understand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS

Sorry I cant judge that for others, I can imagine it would be awkward to finally find out after such a long time ๐ But maybe they did work for others.
New links all work perfectly for me, just checked them all.

I have changed all the pointers in the index. I almost don't want the answer to this questiion, what about the links inside the index, both galaxy zoo and external? For example in
5.1 Galaxy Zoo and Citizen Science https://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000001/discussions/DGZ0000wrb?page=5 there are many links.

Might want to check with others before going to the trouble of changing things, maybe other moderators / other systems like PC's or laptop / not Apple etc.
But for me what works and doesn't, checked quite some links in 5.1:
Everything internal Talk.Galaxyzoo.org with http: NO
Everything internal Talk.Galaxyzoo.org with https: YES
Everything external: YES
Sidenote: was the original SDSS plate ever awarded to a zooite? I mean if it takes up too much space i am willing to relieve GZ of it for free.

Thank you for the info. It is confusing for me, because everything works for me anyway, using Windows Vista and Chrome.
Are you talking about SDSS spectral plates. I think most were melted down, not sure. They would make nice coffee tables. They must weight 100 lbs, so the postage would be rather high.

Its my pleasure, might help a few at least that use the same software as me. Maybe not many if no-one ever complains...
Checking the links i saw the 60 million challenge, but couldn't find a follow-up on the actual winner. Hmm yes 45kg. is s bit too much too send. Funny to see what people make of the discarded plates though.

It looks as if you have to be a scientist or educator to get an SDSS plate.

I don't see the results of the competition. Maybe it is private?
