Iโ€™m not getting any subjects to classify it seems.

Also perhaps DES DR1 would make for an awesome data set ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Yes, I wonder if we are getting something else. I'll check the blog. EDIT: no blog at the moment

Ach, oops, the team had crossed wires about who was going to post an update here.

The short answer: yes, we're out of data for the moment. Well done! We're working on processing some more (including DES DR1! ๐Ÿ˜„) but it's not clear how long that is going to take.

We're also thinking this may be the perfect time to migrate over to the new platform, which we need to do but have been putting off because doing so in the middle of a dataset can complicate the analysis. We will be doing a beta test for that, so you should get a notification of that (once it's ready) if you've signed up as a beta tester on the Zooniverse.

I personally really, really want to get DES data into the site... we have a whole new sky of galaxies waiting for us in the southern hemisphere and I'm eagerly anticipating the science we can do.

    OH YES DES

Took a few quick peeks there right after DR1 release.

The depth of it, GZ virgin territory, pretty big area with billions of objects with a touch of background clusters everywhere ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

    Thanks!

Don't get too excited! It could take some time ! ,D (If we get these images at all ! )

Agreed - e.g. as far as I know DES DR1 doesn't include color cutouts so we have to create our own, which is a major undertaking to make sure faint features are visible and bright things aren't blown out. We've done that before for other datasets, but in many ways it's new with each survey.

There are also other datasets out there (like GAMA) that we can keep working with, so we'll see what order that goes in! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  • Ghost_Sheep_SWR by Ghost_Sheep_SWR

    Ok ok ok fine.

But AFAIK image cutout service is explicitly named in their first data release. Iโ€™ll check when I got the time.

Perhaps GAMA RGB images might be possible?

If you want to keep classifying, have a scroll through zooniverse.org/projects to find other projects that need your help.

    A suggestion:
would it be feasible to somehow 'point' where the galaxies are in a way similar to this 3D view of Laniakea : https://sketchfab.com/models/754cb85550fb42588175f8a215718521 (Daniel Pomarede) or even https://www.bathsheba.com/crystal/laniakea/ ? I guesstimate that both graphics extend over a distance from z=0 to z=0.04 or so. Ergo, most of the galaxies for classification, having z=0.08 - 0.13, fall outside of Laniakea. It would be nice to have a an idea of the surroundings over there. Maybe some sites can show what lies in the direction of a given set of galactic coordinates?

So here's an opportunity to tackle something perhaps a bit more demanding? Radio Galaxy Zoo is in need of a lot more clicks, and has - I would argue - a quite enviable track record of citizen scientists (a.k.a. volunteers, zooites) making independent, paper-worthy discoveries (no, it's not only about finding super-massive black holes!).

A perhaps hidden plus (or not!): RGZ Talk uses the same, soon to be deprecated, Ouroboros-based platform!

    Happy hunting! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Well, it sounds interesting but expensive. We have a long wait even for essential things.

  • Ghost_Sheep_SWR by Ghost_Sheep_SWR in response to Budgieye's comment.

A skyviewer of some sorts might be interesting but indeed expensive.

I think this can be done much simpler. Just index the coordinates of subjects (which is done anyway for the SDSS object link) and add a coordinate searchbox in โ€˜Searchโ€™. Define a search radius and all indexed GZ subjects inside that radius will be the search result.

Nothing fancy but relatively easy to implement I think.

Two thumbs up to this - RGZ is a great project with great volunteers and it still needs lots of help to get through the data!

This is a good suggestion -- not flashy, but it generally works.

I'd love to get Aladin and GZ to talk to each other so we could pass coordinates from GZ into Aladin... but, as Budgieye and Ghost_Sheep_SWR have said, there are very few resources for new developments. Moving to the new platform will hopefully help for the essential stuff, at least!

  • Ghost_Sheep_SWR by Ghost_Sheep_SWR in response to vrooje's comment.

And could still be very usefull to include past subjects from this GZ iteration. Already so many thousands of objects, comments and threads in here.

Search result could include something like ID AGZ000xxxx (Talk.galaxyzoo.org).

Search result could include something like ID AGZ000xxxx (Talk.galaxyzoo.org).

And to help with that, perhaps there could be some kind of sticky which lists all the "AXX" sub-projects, or at least those which been Galaxy Zoo Subjects (as they are called in Panoptes-speak).

More generally, there are a number of Zooniverse projects, besides Galaxy Zoo, which involve eyeballing (and sometimes more) galaxies, Galaxy Zoo: 3D for example. Ambitious sure, but it'd be wonderful to be able to enter coordinates of a galaxy (say) and get all the mentions (Talk posts, Comments, even Collections; and let's not forget the original Galaxy Zoo Forum) of that galaxy, across all Zooniverse projects ... One can but dream ...

Oh yeah that would be very cool! I tried to keep the suggestion in the lowest cost - highest impact lane ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

On a side-note, I do miss the occasional classification when Iโ€™m not busy with a self-assigned project. But, the future is bright; maybe DES subjects, LMC/SMC should launch anytime now (overdue target date?), new GZ platform, HST Gap Filler program... forgot anything?

We're also thinking this may be the perfect time to migrate over to the new platform,

Tried the beta version of the new UI a few days ago. It looks similar to the UIs used in some other Zooniverse projects. Same technology I guess. But it makes the classification process slower.

In the new UI, the user has to click on a choice and then move the mouse down to click on Next. Makes the work much, much slower than the current interface in which one can switch to the next choice with less mouse movement.

  • vrooje by vrooje admin, scientist in response to karthikeyan.d's comment.

Agreed, there are definitely some tradeoffs to moving to a more generalized platform. On the other hand, the new platform is really well designed in terms of accessibility, so it's actually easier on the new site to classify without using the mouse at all -- you can use the tab, arrows, and enter keys to move through the classification and choose options and so on. I just did this on a different project and it's very fast and easy to get into a pattern where you tab once to the choices, scroll through and pick the one that applies, tab until you get to the "Next" or "Done" button, and then hit enter to move to the summary screen/next classification depending on the project design.

I'm not sure if the beta version is still up just at the moment, but if it is that would be a great sandbox to try out classifying using the keyboard shortcuts to see if it's something that might work for you. I found it really enjoyable to classify this way, but I don't know how others feel!

It is. Tabbing does work, but I find it less error-prone to make the main classification selection with my mouse.

  • karthikeyan.d by karthikeyan.d in response to vrooje's comment.

Thanks. I did not know about the keyboard shortcuts. I tried them. This method too is slower than the mouse-controlled older UI but that could be because I am new to this one. I've been using the old one for 10+ years. Will try the keyboard shortcuts for some more time and see how it goes.

Could it be possible to re-arrange the buttons in such a way that the first Tab after a selection takes one to the Next button instead of the Back or help buttons?

On pressing Tab, we enter the options area and reach the first option but it is not automatically selected. We've to press Space to select it. If the first option is not the one we want then we can use the arrow keys to navigate between the options. The arrow keys automatically select the option. Can this be done with the first Tab too so that the first option is automatically selected? If that is the needed option, the user need not press Space to select it and can just press Tab to move to the buttons.

    Thanks
