What is the obvious spot at the center of this galaxy?

The stars in this galaxy are probably very centrally concentrated compared to some other galaxies, and that makes the light much brighter at the center. The shadow-looking effect is just an artifact of the telescope; you can see some of the surrounding objects (which are foreground stars from our galaxy) have it too.

This artefact is actually quite annoying.
