Bright area on one side of galaxy

  • Budgieye by Budgieye moderator

The galaxy on the right side has a bright area. It is more obvious in SkyServer

    bright area

Could it be an area illuminated by the glow of the AGN from the central galaxy?

    central galaxy z=0.05

    edge-on galaxy z=0.046 http://skyserver.sdss3.org/dr8/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=1237667248620503126

    It's intriguing, isn't it?

However, this field has plenty of color artifacts, so perhaps this may be just one more. For example, just an arcmin or so away, SDSS J032544.71-152123.4:

I think you are correct. There are blue areas under other things.

I'll add a resounding "hmmmm". Indeed there are other bright objects with color artifacts in this area - zooming out a bit in SSS Navigator shows that this is right at the southern edge of SDSS image coverage, so maybe the software had less information to work with in registering the images. It's no better in DR10 (hope springs eternal). Still, it's worth me making a note of it for future examination just in case.

    Thank you NGC3314.
Thank you also for your post in the forum listing your AGN illuminated galaxy companions.
