Possible Ram Pressure Stripping in UGC 02665
-
by williamaskew
The Perseus Cluster is a perfect environment for Ram Pressure Stripping to take place. UGC 02665's umbrella shape is Indicative that RPS is occuring.
I only found one paper that mentioned UGC 02665.

Thanks Abe for posting these. Top images are SDSS. the B&W image is DSS2 (blue) showing the bowed shape of UGC 02665 as it plows through the 'intra-cluster medium'

I might have actually seen something like this. I'll keep an eye out for them.

I smell a new project and will soon start looking for more examples 😃.

How about this one, Billy?
PS This galaxy is not in a cluster.

Could this be one?

Here is a nice article - including a video - about ram pressure stripping:

Here is another galaxy with ram pressure stripping.
AGZ00022ma - #NGC 4402 ; #UGC 7528
Right in the middle of the Virgo cluster: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap080425.html

Yes this one above is also in this article.

I had a look in the vicinity
tjitso but there isnt a cluster for your object to be interacting with.Posted

Yeah, I checked it later and saw the same. Oh well 😃

Just came across this one again:

Searching for #cluster, provides with a couple of possible RPS candidates:

Very faint:

That first one has a good shape. Remember to check to see if redshifts of neighbouring 'cluster' galaxies are close

Abe that is the one I thought was RPS in your 'irregular' discussion a couple months back.

Yes, you showed us the way already then 😃
Glad you are back 😃

Will do.

Maybe this one, if the features aren't the result of a merger or flyby. And it is in a cluster 😃

We have to be a bit careful, some features may not be attributable to ram pressure stripping but the result of a fly by or a merger:
