What's going on here?

Can someone with more experience with this stuff tell me what this is. I can't get over the shape of the bright object to the left. It doesn't look anything like a star to me, and NED offers no possible explanations for an overlap. NED has something about an Absorption Line Galaxy, sounds like an Emission Line Galaxy, but I haven't seen anything like this with an elliptical or lenticular galaxy before...

Hmm.. First let us line up the possibilities, and what we know.
Elliptical is orange. So a redshift of 0.546 sounds good. If there are emission lines, then it would be exact, because you get better z if you have an emission line to latch onto.

Many references in NED. As you know, it takes hours to get any real information about one object, instead you get is graphs and equations.

Shape:
If it a binary nucleus? It may be an old merger and the elliptical would have settled down and would not look disturbed. There is no hint of shell structure in the galaxy.

Something in the elliptical but not a collision, such as a voorwerpje, or but these are usually a uniform colour

or a starforming area, maybe caused by being hit by a nuclear jet, these are usually blue, but an old one could be red.

If overlap, and the oval object is further away, I would expect it to look redder. I went into examine and zoomed in using Ctrl+ and to me it looks whiter, which would probably means that it is closer.
If overlap, and the oval object is closer, that would mean it is quite small. Quite small. Nearby galaxies don't come that small, and if they are, they are usually dim blue things.
Even closer, a star in our galaxy, but as you say, it is not round.

Asteroids move too fast. Comet is not likely, it it were close enough to the Sun to have a tail, it would look bigger and move in the image (red/blue sides)
I still don't know. Anyone else want to make a guess?
