Lensing?

  • dcardani by dcardani

    Is this showing lensing? It looks like in the lower left (SSW) area of the image there's some lensing. Or is that tidal debris or something else?

    Hi dcardani

    The galaxy is seriously disturbed, so I' go for tidal trails. No lensing in this image, sorry. Also the 'arc' is too far away from the galaxy to be a gravitational lensed arc.

    happy hunting !

    Hi all,
    is there a chance to distinguish tidals from lensing? The ark looks so beautifully regular. And somehow the blue galaxy at 12 oclock also seems a little enhanced.

    Greetings
    Bernd

    Here is a nice paper with 10 images of gravitational lenses on page 3 for reference arcs and distances from the galaxies / clusters, you can download it as PDF;

    http://arxiv.org/abs/1211.1421

    As far as i know the chance of finding a lens that isn't found already by others, or more importantly arc-finding software are 'universally' small 😃
