Blue and Red colors

I see a blue patch on the left, and just below it there is a red dot. Is the red indicative of a red giant star? There are a few more of these scattered around the image outside the center galaxy. What is the blue patch?

The blue patch is a star forming area in the galaxy. The red dot could be a foreground star from our galaxy. The bright round dots in the image are all stars from our galaxy.
