Red Dwarf ?

  • bluemagi by bluemagi

When you pull up this picture on the SDSS at 8-9:00 is a really red star its a M5. I was wondering if it is a red dwarf ? Its at RA:258.57609 DEC:28.92517.

Thanks. It did caught my eye because of the bright red dots. There seem to be alot of Dwarfs around the pictures we are looking at recently. In fact there are alot of other unusual things around.

One star - the lower (S) one - has a spectrum, and the SDSS pipeline classes it as M5. However, I'm not sure it's necessarily a red dwarf; could it be a red giant or supergiant?

The other star has no spectrum, and while its colors suggest it also is an M (spectral) class star, I don't think we can conclude that it's a dwarf, giant, or whatever. There's also nothing to indicate that these two are physically close to each other; it could be a chance alignment.

According to NED, neither star appears in any published paper, so we don't have any idea of even any estimates of parallax or proper motion (both of which would help deciding how far away they are, and also what type of star they are).
