Merging

  • Zebx by Zebx

Hi, I've a question about merging. In this picture the irregular galaxy has z = 0.07859, the galaxy just under it has z = 0.07837. Is it plausible to think they're merging?

You can calculate distances to the galaxies using this link

    http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=cosmological+redshift&a=*C.cosmological+redshift-_*Formula- (click on cosmological redshift)

If their separation is less than about 3 million light-years, then I would say that they have a gravitational interaction.

Ah ok ok. I was not yet come to that thread(Index for galaxy zoo talk), I'm on "Astrophysics for galaxy zoo talk". Thank you for the informations! 😉

Good luck with the calculations 😃 Are you going to show your workings?

Using wolfram calculator they both are at a distance of 1.03 bilion ly and the distance between the nuclei is about 23", corresponding to a distance of 114700 ly. While the distance between the "lowest point" of the right side of the central galaxy and the "upper point" of the bottom galaxy is about 8", so a distance of 40000 ly. I think they're merging so.
