Alignment of Galaxies and Odd Bright Lines

  • MediocreMessier by MediocreMessier

While going through my first few photos, I was immediately surprised by this photo and was wondering whether any of you might be able to answer my two question. Firstly, is it common for a spiral galaxy to be set on a collision course in the vertical position? In my past reading and online searches, I have only ever seen cases where the galaxy initially impacts with one of its arms. My second question is what could those long red lines be on the right side of the image, could they be long pockets of gas or are they most likely just simple lens distortion?
