Identify a Galaxy with multiple "nucleus?"

  • latinquasar by latinquasar

I don't know what type of galaxy this could be. It seems to have been formed by galactic cannibalism, but the nucleus of the individual galaxies are placed in a beautiful hexagon (almost regular). Also, all of them have almost the same brightness.

There are some blue features, possibly indicating star formation regions in the outer boundary of this "galaxy".

Does anyone know a possible explanation for this object?

    Hi latinquasar

As zoob1172 mentioned this is a simulated galaxy from the Illustris data set. And they do tend to simulate a lot of these weird inner 'ring' like galaxies. I'd classify it as a features - not an edge on - no bar - no spiral - no bulge - something odd : ring (maybe) - other.
(And just so you know, in these Illustris images, bluish/white blobs signify star forming areas in the galaxy.)
But hey that is just me. Just answer the questions as well as you can and you classification will be very valuable.

    Happy hunting ! 😄
