UGC 7683 - elliptical with faint outer ring?
-
by JeanTate
In looking at some of the ringed galaxies in Buta (2017), this collisional ring galaxy caught my eye (SDSS J123204.38+662416.2):
In Table 2, this object has the name "UGC 07683 NOTES01", and I got to wondering what UGC 07683 (SDSS J123201.52+661957.3) looks like. Here it is:
Are my eyes playing tricks? Is there an almost complete ring beyond the yellow body of the galaxy?
PS1 (it's not in the DECaLS footprint) isn't much help (it's clearly not deep nor consistent enough), though there might be something in the i-band image :
What do you think?
If it's real, have you come across other, similar, objects (an elliptical with an outer ring)?

Yes; AGZ000d1ww. I've seen several of these recently but I also thought my eyes were playing tricks; how should we tag these?

I reckon #RE , for Elliptical with an outer Ring. Or perhaps #ringedE ?
Turns out this is one of the objects in Buta (2017); it's also named NGC 4513, and he gives its morphology as "(R)E3 or (R)SA(l)0^+" (i.e. an E or S0+ galaxy with an outer ring). His note is:
excellent case with large, very faint ring
So, neither of us needs to worry about our eyesight! 😄
There are a dozen or so galaxies with Hubble stage -5 (i.e. elliptical) in this catalog. Some are clearly unlike our friend, but some are. For example:
SDSS J135610.24+114916.6 (left), SDSS J103334.63+115425.1 (center), and SDSS J121616.84+162325.8 (right):
SDSS J113713.65+231721.9 (left), SDSS J122403.88+561005.5 (center), and SDSS J151714.40+213507.8 (right):
All but one of the dozen or so (i.e. not just the handful of examples above) have morphologies of (R)E..., or (R')E..., or (R)Epec; hence my recommendation re a tag 😃
