Odd protrusion / IR object

Referenced as very isolated galaxy with an (mostly IR) protrusion at 7 o’clock that also seems to disturbed the disk at 6 o’clock side? Another thread also had such a mostly IR object hiding in / behind the target galaxy.

What are these extragalactic objects / features that are almost not visible in optical but good in IR, relatively small and lurk in the vicinity of regular galaxies?

Images from PS1, SDSS DECaLS, VSTKIDS and VIKING.

If the object at 7 o'clock was part of an x in an x-shaped bulge, the x ought to be seen mostly within the boxy bulge like it usually does. But this object seems to stick out below the boxy bulge.

Could the object just be a small edgeon? If one zooms in the GAMA image, it almost looks as if the object has a slight bulge in the middle. There is another similar edgeon at 8 o'clock a bit away.

Yeah could be an edgeon, but what’s a bit weird about that is that it’s bright in IR and only visible in VSTKIDS r band. A rather strange combination, would expext it to get brighter in i band.

I did see the one at 10:00 (8:00?) but it’s only visible as a sharp line line in r band so I’m assuming artifact. Wouldn’t expect a distant background galaxy to be so wel defined, and in r band at that. But agreed it does look perfectly like a sharp edgeon, a single line with a dot in the exact centre 😃

Hmm maybe a single dot in i band at exact same coords? A bit too faint to be certain...

I meant that the object sticking out below the bulge at 7 o'clock could be an edgeon, not the thin object at 10:00, which looks like an artifact to me.

The similar edgeon I mentioned at 8 o'clock is a long way from the galaxy (in the GAMA image).
