I think more likely stars - I'm going to bet this is near the Galactic plane (and then I will check that using the Examine link). Hang on....

A galaxy cluster wouldn't look entirely dissimilar to this (the galaxies within it would look more fuzzy though), but in this case it's a particularly dense region of stars from our own galaxy instead, I think. This becomes more obvious with a wider view though, available at
