Could this be a supernova in the galaxy?

Not this time - it happens just to be a star in the foreground. To check for supernovae we need to look at earlier imaging and see if the star wasn't there before. In this case though, it turns out it was.

What is the pale patch running NE-SW in the galaxy that (curiously) lines up with the star?

That would be a bar 😃

Coincidence? a bar lined up with a overlapping star?

@budgieye, wow, that looks almost identical to the AGZ0004o08 image, flipped, although it's clearly slightly different. Which image is that?
(Note: not science team, not a scientist, just a curious Zooniverse team member!)

Hi Darren,
It is the same galaxy ! The images we get here in GZ are rotated and/or flipped with regard to the images in Skyserver. No idea why though ! 😄
