Overlap Versus Merger

  • PDXDave by PDXDave

So I'm thinkin this would be an example of an #overlap versus a merger, as neither galaqxy is showing obvious signs of purturbance.

Actually, I'd lean towards #merger Why? Because of the blue stuff (recent star formation in a tidal tail? gas fluorescing in the light from an active nucleus? - so possible #voorwerpje ?), and the progressively rotated apparent main axis of the bigger galaxy, as you go from bright to faint. Also, a merger of two ellipticals (or #lenticulars ) may not produce obvious signs of disturbance (depends on relative speed, whether there are disks in either, which way they're going, relative masses, ...)
