DR8 says STAR

  • zutopian by zutopian

The central object looks like a #star. DR8 says STAR. So actually this image shouldn't be displayed for classification. Just stars, which are wrongly classed as galaxies by DR8, should be displayed. Asking for comments by members of the science team.

It's kind of a technical point. We applied the criteria of the difference between PSF magnitude and extended magnitude larger than a certain amount to identify things in DR8 which were not likely to be stars. This was the same as used by DR7 and earlier. I'm not sure why then the DR8 ID is different - perhaps they changed the criteria slightly.

We really did our best to give you a sample of galaxies, however there are a lot more of you than us (kind of the point of Galaxy Zoo), so odd things will slip through.

Would it be possible to check all the new GZ data to find out, how many of such cases exist?
Cases, where objecttype is STAR in DR8, but GALAXY in the GZ data.
