Anyone have a clue what the figure eight is doing in this elliptical?

sorry i cant help answer the question, but it seems to have some sort of geometric shape, as if its dots that have been joined.

maybe some sort of light refraction? I couldn't see the stars in there lined up like that but who knows in this strange place we call the universe.

It is very strange, #odd even. It may be a peculiar #barred #spiral (not an elliptical), where the viewing geometry makes the bars and arms (such as they are) appear to be a boxy figure eight. There is a kind of disc galaxy that looks a lot like an elliptical, not least because it (often) doesn't have arms (or not obvious ones), and is 'red' rather than blue (because there are no new stars being formed). Such a galaxy is called a #lenticular.

Maybe there is a black hole that is tilted the right way to cause that. Black holes can cause lensing.

You are seeing the bars from both galaxies, but they are not aligned.
