Just overlapping?

3 galaxies and 2 stars? all stars? Very unusual grouping.

2 stars, 3 #ellipticals (certainly ETGs - early type galaxies - i.e. either elliptical or lenticular), which are probably #overlaps. At the heart of a rich cluster of galaxies, there are sometimes so many ellipticals it's impossible to even begin to work out which are overlapping and which merging. For example, in this forum post:

Besides, if the merging ellipticals have no gas (often, but not always the case), how could you tell if they were merging?
