Can we trust our eyes, re "dustlanes"?

  The two yellow stars in this image seem to have nice orange/brown "dustlanes" through their centers. Yet they don't, and can't.

  So how many of the Eos (edge-on spirals) that seem to have a dustlane through their nuclei/bulges actually do have one? How often are we being misled, by the image processing, into thinking we see dustlanes, where none actually exist?
