how to differentiate a supernova from foreground star? If it's not too bright, by looking at the image alone, you can't.

Even if it is bright, just by looking at one picture you'll never be able to tell. You need multiple images taken at different times

Whoops! If it's too bright, it cannot possibly be a supernova (not in that galaxy). "Too bright"? Much brighter than the galaxy itself.
