Transitions in Galaxies?

  • PDXDave by PDXDave

Do galaxies sometimes transition from smooth to spiral?

This looks like a smooth galaxy that is just forming #spiral arms. Would that be an good guess of how this galaxy is progressing?

Sometimes I let my idle curiosity get the best of me.

I apologize for posting lame questions.

I don't think ellipticals can start to rotate and create arms. You get an elliptical by the collision of spirals (or ellipticals).
Btw, I see here a barred two armed spiral

Thank you for the link. Exactly what I was wondering.

I think I'm going to adopt a new rule for myself: No more posts on the talk board. You guys have better things to do with your time than babysit amateurs with a million stupid questions.

@PDXdave, no way! Your input is as valued as anyone else's.! The whole point is to say what you see and not be influenced by others? You don't need to be qualified or experienced to post here 😃 everyone has to start somewhere and you should feel welcomed and encouraged to participate. Our very next comment could be the first ever observation of some enormously important object. Even if we don't understand what it is, we may be the vital ingredient in bringing it to the attention of the experts! Post away 😃

Well said:-) I was attracted to this post because I wanted to know what the answer might be. I have learned something new precisely because you asked the question PDXDave. So thanks for that 😉 I am better for knowing of the link, but I might not have posted to the thread myself... You never know how many people you are helping because you were curious (or brave) enough to ask a question that others don't (or won't) ask for themselves. I've seen plenty of lame answers, but I can't think of any truly lame questions that I've come across 😉
GZ - great site! 😃 edit: this may be of interest? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_formation_and_evolution or http://www.star.uclan.ac.uk/~vpd/clusters.html There's always google! If I come across something like this I get hours of fun googling each phrase that I don't understand...

This one looks like a #spiral, but there are galaxies, which are inbetween ellipticals and spirals.: They are called lenticular. (search on wikipedia)
Most of us are amateurs in Talk, but some of us are more experienced, because we took part in the previous GZs and/or were doing astronomy before. Your question is actually a good question! There are other questions, which might seem "stupid" (maybe in hintsight ), but we have to ask in order to learn or find something out! So please free to ask questions!
