Could it be a foreground star? I've seen a number of stars with the same optical effect

That is what I thought at first and it may be but it looks totally different on SS. It also sits where the nucleus would likely be. Being a W-R there would be a lot of emissions.

In the image in DR8 it looks like a very bright center.
No foreground star for me

probably the blue dot is nearer and has nothing to do with the spiral, but just to be sure I am asking for comments...

Normally a dot looking like that is a star, but in this case it looks like it's the nucleus of the galaxy.

Two bright blue objects appear to be nuclei - possibly colliding galaxies ?
