How are the two galaxies #interacting?

    "False 'dustlane'? Or what?":(47x140@125,212)

Looks like smaller R (right) is closer to us than the larger L (left) and that R is slightly #overlapping L, but why is the line between the two dark? Is R physically distorting L? Is light being distorted? Are there light absorbing gas clouds at the edge of R which absorb light from edge of L? Or is it an artifact of the telescope; camera; or software?

There is no distortion to indicate interaction between the two. Object to the right may be overlapping the main galaxy. any of the explanations you offer for the dark line are possible. Not sure how to go about verifying.
