  I really don't want to make the same mistake twice, but are all those blue, reds and greens just problems with the camera, or is it something else I am unaware of?

  Apt appraisal. It is the pixel rendering for CANDELS. Mag18 will produce spikes in almost any target. This is an artifact of classification, aka a star.
