New Galactic Object

  • captainknipz by captainknipz

In the center, near the lower right-hand corner of the image, there appears to be two elliptical galaxies merging or this could be a ring of dust blocking some of the light from the central bulge or it could be gravitational lensing.

These objects are stars, not galaxies.

How can it not be a galaxy? The home page clearly says "Galaxy Zoo", not "star zoo". Besides, some galaxies are so far away that they look like stars.

Sum times the satellites get stars along with galaxy's, & sum times the stars are in the way of the galaxy. Here is more on weird images http://talk.galaxyzoo.org/help/discussions/DGZ1006byh

How can you tell if it is a star or a galaxy?

Okay, so it probably is a star but still the two stars look like they are colliding. This is still interesting as this is a rare occurence in the universe. I wonder if the collision will end in supernova.

It's hard to tell in these images whether two stars are actually colliding or whether they only appear to be on top of one another because of a coincidence. It's more likely that they're not physically that close together, but just appear in the same line of sight.

The same thing happens with galaxies, but with galaxies there are often signs of disturbance that indicate two galaxies really are interacting.
