  Has there been anything since this shot that might give a better picture or more detail? I agree that they appear to be stars however it seems unusual nonetheless.

  It's probably been imaged in WISE, and maybe in the UKIDSS large scale survey, but unlikely to have been imaged in the optical with the same or greater resolution than SDSS.
