star not #merging galaxy

  I think that there is a star in the foreground that appears to be a merging galaxy. Question : How close to a galaxy does another galaxy have to be to consider the two to be merging galaxies?

  The white object is indeed a foreground star, so no merger here .

  As for your other question: for me it is a question of disturbance.If there is some visible disturbance/interaction it's a merger for me.
