When several "blotches" appear I am still only asked to identify ONE galaxy. I'm at lost as what to do...

Always classify the object in the center of the image.

It seems to be merging but how can I tell whether it is or whether one is simply further away than the other, thus not even close together?

If there are distortions in one or both of the galaxies, merger is a safe bet.

I know that, but there are no distortions in this one. Do you think there is a merger?
