    I can't see any dark region or dark smudges. What I can see is a grid pattern in the magenta-colored object. My guess - and that's all it is - would be that it's an artifact, perhaps some kind of trace of the CCD wells (or whatever the detector architecture is) in the camera.

    To me by far the most unusual thing about this object is its color ... there seems to be no trace of green, and only the slightest hint of blue, which suggests that there may be a failure in the camera or image processing pipeline (or both). However, in SDSS this doesn't look all that odd, so I guess it's more likely a camera/pipeline failure.

    Perhaps a SCIENTIST could weigh in?
