How close to consider it a Merge?

How close should two objects be to consider a merge? If not a merge, is only one object described and the other ignored?

Hi Ericha and welcome to the Zoo
It is not so much a question of distance but more of distortion. If you see signs of interaction then I call it a merger. Two galaxies that appear close together could be very far apart and just be in the line of sight.
In this image there s no merger for me.
