Foreground star or merger
-
There seem to be two hashtags for this - one says merger and the other says foreground star. How do you tell the difference. The lower left one is the same colour but the top right one has a sort of trail linking it to the spiral galaxy. Also bottom arm seems to have a 'lump'! Apologies for lack of technical language - I'm a newbie!

Hi and welcome @hilscakes 😃
We were all newbies once!
I will be honest this is a difficult image to classify. I was going to say the top right object is a foreground star - but it looks like we have a tidal trail between it and the central galaxy. No spectra on either object.
The blue lump 😃 looks like an area of intense star formation, that would account for the clumpyness (and yes, that is a technical word ).
As for the bottom object - satellite galaxy?
Have fun classifying 😃

Thank you for your speedy response - that is really helpful. First day of this and I'm addicted to classifying - I'm doing a galaxy in between watching each point at Wimbledon!
