What is the purple bright spot below the main galaxy? ... Is it another galaxy?

It's a fairly bright star, in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. It looks a little strange because light from the star bounced around inside the camera a bit, and when the three separate images which make up this image - one from each of three different filters - were combined that 'rogue light' ended up making the color artifacts you see.
