Is that an asteroid in the Skyserver Image?

  • Alpha_Aurigae by Alpha_Aurigae

If it is it is my 800th image for my asteroid collection 😃

I would think airplane, that went across the field of view going across 3 filters at the same time. 2 engined jet probably.

Thanks Budgieye, this is a first for me 😃.

Considering that the red light on the airplane appeared brighter in the red filter exposure, I think the airplane was going from left to right.

    @Alpha Aurigae

Closer to the galaxy to classify 1237655126083633277 there is an asteroid 1237655126083633288 in the SE quadrant:

    @ Budgieye
Trails were previously posted December 1 2014 by me at "Green sabres" http://talk.galaxyzoo.org/#/boards/BGZ0000007/discussions/DGZ0000wiz
with hint to large satellite (like ISS or Shuttle) but not of a blinking jet plane.

It's my first seeing of five frames riuzg clocked at the same time:

that is to say the transient object traversed a diagonal arrangement of CCDs of the camera in less than 54s but I can't say westward or eastward.

Some apods show trails from ISS/Iridium/Plane in the same ~4-5mn shot:

Thank you for reminding me about the previous thread.

Airplane flashing lights. If the airplane was quite low, then maybe it flew past quickly in just a second, and we can't detect the flashes.

I think it would be unlikely to be the ISS since it is only visible several hours before sunrise or several hours after sunset. Can we find what time this image was taken?

    SOLAR PRESENCE (OBSERVING SITE)

Time tag is followed by a blank, then a solar-presence symbol:

'*' Daylight (refracted solar upper-limb on or above apparent horizon)

        'C' Civil twilight/dawn

        'N' Nautical twilight/dawn

        'A' Astronomical twilight/dawn

' ' Night OR geocentric ephemeris

LUNAR PRESENCE WITH TARGET RISE/TRANSIT/SET MARKER (OBSERVING SITE)

The solar-presence symbol is immediately followed by another marker symbol:

'm' Refracted upper-limb of Moon on or above apparent horizon

' ' Refracted upper-limb of Moon below apparent horizon OR geocentric

'r' Rise (target body on or above cut-off RTS elevation)

't' Transit (target body at or past local maximum RTS elevation)

's' Set (target body on or below cut-off RTS elevation)

I have seen shuttles near the International Space Station, and the mirror lost from Mir space station. So possibly this double streak could be two things orbiting together.

But if this streak is a satellite, I wouldn't think that it would be the ISS, because the ISS is in a low earth orbit and is only visible for about 2 hours after sunset or 2 hours before sunrise. Anyway, Space Shuttle Atlantis was up from May 19-May 29 2000. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/archives/sts-101.html Also, I think the space station would be much, much brighter.

Maybe Hubble Space Telescope would be a better target, since it is in a higher orbit and might catch the sun's rays more easily. @NGC3314 would know since he talks about seeing Hubble go by.
