Welcome to GZ, slgardnerharris! 😃
This is a sim, from Illustris (see this recent blog post for details). The background is from SDSS, a randomly selected field; the object in the center is a simulated galaxy, with the blue (bluish) blobs representing star-forming regions, and the yellowish parts the 'older' stars in the galaxy. The red (reddish) dots in/near the center are, very likely, a distant galaxy cluster (or possibly some foreground stars in our own Milky Way) that is in 'the background'.
Hope this helps; and happy hunting! 😃
