SDSS Link incorrect

by metalmania
The link to SDSS doesn't seem to be correct - it centers on an object to the right of this one.

Hm - thanks, you're correct. That's the first instance I've seen of that. Has this happened with any other objects in DECaLS/SDSS?

That's the only one I've come across, but not looking very long.

no its more common than you would think, or hope

I hope you made a note of these, so they can be corrected !
Could you please post the identifications (AGZnumbers)
Thanks ! 😄

agz000az7y - seems to center on a star rather than the spiral just below it.
I think something strange with this too, SDSS centers on the pea which is off-center.

AGZ000bhnc - SDSS centers on a satellite trail above the spiral galaxy.

AGZ000amtj - SDSS centers on the star at 2oclock

AGZ000b3wz centers on object classified as star, although the shape suggests they're both galaxies?

I think the central object is a star - The algorithm that chooses what we classify sometimes gets distracted by the brightest object in the frameset.
You could try creating a paper template that you can super-impose over the image on your screen to tell what is directly at the center? It is a trick that Els and myself use.
Remember the template will only be valid for your particular screen resolution and screen dimensions 😃

AGZ000bcmt - this one doesn't exist/can't be found in SDSS at all.

Here it is : http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr9/en/tools/chart/navi.asp?ra=246.66525&dec=11.5035&opt= 😄
You can find it in the SDSS images, but you are right, it isn't in the SDSS database.

Hmm, image is just outside of mapped zone even in dr12, but has a spectrum, somewhere. I wonder how to link onto it?

If Navigate shows there should be a spectroscopic observation at a given location but clicking on that location doesn't pull anything up there are several other search tools you can use. One tool that's handy is the cross-id search, which does a cone search around a list of positions for photo or spectroscopic objects. Click on the buttons at the top for the data you want to retrieve. If you just have an object or two you can enter its position in the box, or you can upload a list of positions from a text file.
Here's a link to the interactive spectrum page for this object: http://dr12.sdss3.org/spectrumDetail?mjd=54572&fiber=444&plateid=2531. The spectrum shows a pretty run of the mill starforming galaxy at z=0.05.

May I remind you that SDSS survey is built on legacy releases up from DR1 to DR12. Back in Jan 2011, SDSS Data Release 8 differs from its predecessors, both because there is additional data, but also in the processing of the data and in some details of the data distribution. see http://www.sdss3.org/dr8/whatsnew.php
The imaging data has been entirely reprocessed as you could see the difference in "photometric objects" in the "chart tool"
http://cas.sdss.org/dr7/en/tools/chart/chart.asp?ra=246.4095499&dec=11.28858421
DR7 ObjId = 587742061635895587
and
http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr9/en/tools/chart/chart.asp?ra=246.4095499&dec=11.28858421
DR9 Objid= 1237667782860735668
All objects close to the star have been washed out.
The spectrum remains available as @mlpeck explains or also in DR7 http://cas.sdss.org/dr7/en/get/specById.asp?id=712647552872218624
DR7 SpecObjID = 712647552872218624
Hope this helps to say SDSS are fabulous databases 😃
