I just wanted to make sure that we're not missing anything important: I suppose the two objects sticking out on either side of the galaxy are just distant galaxies (and not lensing).

Not sure I'd go for lensing (but I can't rule it out !). But what about a possible #polarring ? Anyway, definitely a fascinating galaxy.

A polar ring can usually be seen in front of the galaxy, can't it ?
