This is a very unusual kind of galaxy called a ring galaxy. Many galaxies are ringed, ring galaxies are empty inside. This is one of only a few to be found.

A supernova, like the ring seen in Supernova 1987A? No, then it would be green. This white-blue is the colour of star formation. Also, another part of the ring has had a spectral chart taken, at z=0.04, it is far away.
