Smooth galaxies vs single stars

How do we know whether to classify something like this as a smooth galaxy or single star? I've been classifying them as smooth galaxies, reserving the star classification for something more distinct and less blurry/diffuse.

All these images are of galaxies. Sometimes there is an overlapping star in our own galaxy in front, but just ignore the star and classify the galaxy behind. You are correct that stars have sharper edges, and galaxies are fuzzier.

I think I see an X shape in this galaxy. Or maybe a Y shape.
