That's a foregroundstar from our galaxy. The weird shapes, colours and the diffraction spikes you see are all optical artifacts due to imaging issues.

does the light from the nearby star not interfere with the measurements of the distant galaxy?

I don't think 'cause in that case, images with a galaxy in the middle and dozens of stars around them would be way off.
