    They are all stars in our own galaxy (well, maybe one or two might be distant galaxies).

    The color offsetting ("looks to be hollow on the inside")is an artifact, probably of the image processing rather than in the raw data.

    The colors are - as in all SDSS images - false; however, the algorithm which produces them is designed to exaggerate color differences, so these stars really do have the range of colors you see! 😛
